Local processing

Your PDF does not need to leave your device

When you need to add a password, merge a few statements, or compress a scan, the quickest option often looks like a website: drag the file in, wait, download the result. It feels harmless until you think about what the file contains. Payroll summaries, tax workpapers, bank statements, signed engagement letters, client ID copies. Once a file is uploaded, it sits for some time on a computer you do not control, under rules you probably have not read.

For a bookkeeper, an accountant, or an office manager handling other people’s numbers, that is a real question, not a theoretical one. Your clients trust you with their documents. They expect those documents to go where you send them, and nowhere else along the way.

PDF Protect Plus takes a different approach. The work happens in the app installed on your Windows computer, your Mac, or your Android device. Your PDFs are never sent to our servers: they are processed on your device.

How a file moves through the app

  1. You choose the PDF

You pick a file from a folder on your computer or from your Android device’s storage. The app reads it from there. Nothing is copied to a remote location to get started, and there is no upload progress bar to wait for.

  2. It is processed on your device

Encryption, merging, splitting, compression, watermarking, metadata cleaning and the other tools all run with your device’s own processor and memory. The contents of the PDF stay inside the app while the work is done.

  3. You save a new copy

The result is written as a new file in the location you pick. Your original is kept untouched, so you can compare the two, redo a step, or keep the unprotected version in your own records.

What goes over the internet, and what never does

The app does need to talk to our servers for a few things: signing in to your account, checking that your license is active, and managing your subscription. Your account and license require an internet connection. Those exchanges concern who you are and what you are entitled to use. They do not include your documents.

The contents of your PDFs never travel over that connection. Page text, figures, images, form fields, the passwords you set, and the encrypted local password vault all remain on the device where you work. If you use a team account, members share a subscription, not a pool of uploaded files.

How this differs from tools that upload your files

Online PDF services generally work by receiving your file on their servers, running the operation there, and giving you a link to download the output. That model can be convenient, but it means a full copy of your document leaves your hands before any protection is applied. If you are adding a password precisely because the file is sensitive, uploading it first works against the goal.

With local processing, the sensitive moment never happens. The unprotected file is only ever on your own device, and it only becomes something you send once it is already encrypted.

Sharing is your decision

Processing a file locally does not stop you from sending it. It simply puts you in charge of where it goes. On desktop, you attach the saved copy to an email, drop it in your client portal, or copy it to a shared drive, the same way you already work.

On Android, the share button opens the system share sheet. You then pick the destination yourself: an email app, a messaging app, a cloud drive you already use. The app never uploads the file on its own, and it does not choose a destination for you.

Where local processing makes a difference

Month-end client packages

Merge reports exported from your accounting software, number the pages, and add a password before anything leaves your office.

Documents with personal identifiers

Files that carry Social Security numbers, account numbers, or dates of birth can be protected without first being handed to a third party.

Scans made on the go

On Android, scan a signed paper form with the camera, turn it into a PDF, and protect it on the same device before sharing.

Large folders on the desktop

Automation on Windows and macOS can assemble, number, watermark, compress and protect a whole folder of PDFs into a new subfolder, all on your computer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an internet connection to use the app?

Yes for your account and license: signing in, license checks and subscription management go through our servers. The PDF processing itself runs on your device, and your document contents are not part of those exchanges.

Are my PDFs ever sent to your servers?

No. Your PDFs are never sent to our servers: they are processed on your device. We have no copy of your documents to store, read, or lose.

Where are my passwords kept?

Passwords you choose to keep can go in the encrypted local password vault, which stays on the device. The app can also offer to save a copy of a password in a text file; if you do, keep it in a different folder than the PDF.

When I share from Android, does the app upload the file?

No. The share button opens the system share sheet, and you choose the app or service that receives the file. The app itself never uploads anything.

Is my original file changed?

No. Every operation saves a new copy, and the original is kept untouched.
